India to Review Food Labels for Sugar, Salt and Fat Content

New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India has asked the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India to examine the implementation of front-of-pack warning labels on packaged foods that contain high levels of sugar, salt, and fat.

The court observed that such labeling systems are already followed in several countries and help consumers make more informed choices about the food they purchase.

The move came during a hearing related to consumer awareness and public health concerns regarding processed foods. The court has directed the food regulator to submit a status report within four weeks.

Health experts believe that clearer warning labels could help reduce lifestyle diseases by encouraging people to limit the consumption of unhealthy food products.

If implemented, the labeling system could require packaged food manufacturers to clearly display warning symbols or notices when products exceed recommended levels of sugar, salt, or fat.

The decision is expected to have a significant impact on India’s food industry and consumer awareness.
